An extremely sophisticated online scam almost led me to disaster.
My hosting company manages my own domain with my personal email address.
Recently, for the first time, my email host suddenly went down with no explanation.
It was serious: I use it for both personal and professional reasons. After trying several solutions unsuccessfully, I decided to use my subscription to a popular technical support company affiliated with a large electronics group. They connect online, take control of my computer, and fix issues; I’ve been using them for years.
The service from this company has always been satisfactory, but I hadn’t needed to use it for a while. I opened my agenda and called the number I had noted. And something seemed… strange. In the past, the person answering that number directed me to a specific website hosted by the electronics retailer. Connections were clear and operators precise.
But this time, the same number was answered by a technical support person with a heavy accent and a horrible phone connection, who claimed to be from technical support and directed me to a different website. “Oh well,” I thought, “maybe the company has outsourced technical support to a third party – it happens.” But when I entered the new site into Google, the searches looked strange… especially since the search also showed the actual technical support service of the retailer.
And it wasn’t the one the agent urged me to “just log in to resolve your issue.” I hung up and closed the screen, and for a second, I broke into a cold sweat. THE LESSON
I thought I knew about scams, but this one was truly insidious. Bad actors took control of an abandoned phone number associated with a legitimate technical support company and posed as the company’s technical support. I nearly allowed them to take control of my laptop.
To confirm, I called the retailer’s general number. The technician told me they were using this old number, but they had a new one. She directed me to the familiar URL and website, and a technician with a clear and sharp connection took control of my computer and updated it.
While I was on the phone, I updated all the numbers associated with this company. (And yes, they had changed them all.) One might think they would have informed their subscribers of the number change! Fortunately, I was skeptical enough and saved myself from major trouble – but just barely. I thought I was savvy against scams, but this one almost got me in the most disastrous way possible.

ToggleWhat is open blade shaving?
Open blade shaving is a traditional shaving method that uses a straight razor or open blade. Unlike modern multi-blade or electric razors, the open blade offers unparalleled precision and closeness, allowing for a sharper and more personalized shave. This technique, practiced for centuries, emphasizes mastery and delicacy, transforming a daily ritual into an almost ceremonial experience.
The straight razor, often made from high-quality stainless steel, relies on a tangent blade, an inventive technology that keeps the blade in place while providing the necessary flexibility to adapt to the contours of the face. This flexibility is essential to avoid irritation and ensure a smooth shave. Additionally, using an open blade requires a certain level of skill, imparting an aspect of craftsmanship and tradition to shaving.
Enthusiasts of open blade shaving value not only the final result but also the process itself: the preparation ritual, the application of shaving cream, the precise angle of the razor, and the care taken with each stroke. This methodical approach contrasts with the speed of modern methods, providing a refreshing pause in an often hectic routine.
Moreover, open blade shaving is considered eco-friendly, as the razor can last a lifetime with proper maintenance, reducing waste associated with disposable blades. This sustainable aspect appeals to an increasing number of men concerned about their environmental impact while seeking an authentic and high-quality shaving experience.
What are the benefits of open blade shaving?
Open blade shaving offers numerous advantages that attract those seeking a superior shaving experience. First and foremost, close shaving is one of the main benefits. Thanks to the sharp blade and the flexibility of the tangent blade, the straight razor allows for impeccable results, often unmatched by modern razors. This precision reduces the need for touch-ups, minimizing irritation and the risk of cuts.
Next, personalized shaving is another significant advantage. Each man can adjust the pressure and angle of the razor according to the shape of his face and the sensitivity of his skin. This customization allows the shave to be tailored to specific areas, such as the jawline or neck, offering optimal comfort and effectiveness.
Additionally, open blade shaving is often viewed as a more relaxing and meditative experience. The accompanying ritual – including choosing the razor, applying shaving cream, and taking time for each stroke – transforms shaving into a moment of self-care and well-being. This approach can also improve skin health by promoting natural exfoliation and better blood circulation.
Another notable advantage is durability and long-term savings. Although the initial investment in a good straight razor may be higher, it can last a lifetime with minimal maintenance, compared to disposable razors or cartridge systems that require frequent replacements. Furthermore, blades can be sharpened multiple times, thereby reducing costs and environmental impact.
Finally, open blade shaving embodies a tradition and craftsmanship that adds a cultural and aesthetic dimension to the shaving ritual. Mastering this technique is often seen as a sign of skill and sophistication, adding personal and symbolic value to the act of shaving.
How to prepare for open blade shaving?
Adequate preparation is essential to ensure a successful and pleasant open blade shaving experience. The first step is to prepare the skin and facial hair. This can be done by taking a hot shower or applying a warm towel to the face for a few minutes. This heat softens the hair and opens the pores, facilitating a smoother shave and reducing the risk of irritation.
Next, choosing the right shaving cream or soap is crucial. Opt for a quality product that hydrates the skin and provides good lubrication. Artisan shaving creams, often enriched with essential oils, can offer additional benefits like hydration and soothing properties. Apply the product generously using circular motions to evenly distribute the cream and create a rich, homogeneous lather.
The shaving tool should also be carefully prepared. Ensure that the straight razor blade is clean, sharp, and free of rust. A well-maintained tangent blade guarantees adequate flexibility and optimal performance. Holding the razor with a firm yet gentle grip allows you to control the angle and pressure applied, thus ensuring a precise and comfortable shave.
It is also recommended to moisturize the skin well after shaving. Using an aftershave balm or soothing lotion helps to calm the skin, reduce inflammation, and prevent irritation. Choose products containing natural ingredients like aloe vera or chamomile to maximize benefits.
Finally, make sure to have an organized shaving space that is well lit. A good quality mirror and a stable surface to place your essentials allow you to work under optimal conditions, minimizing the risks of accidents and making the shaving experience more enjoyable.
The steps of open blade shaving
Performing an open blade shave requires certain techniques and methods to achieve the best results. Here are the main steps to follow for an unforgettable shaving experience:
1. Prepare the skin and hair
Start by softening the hair on your face with hot water, either by taking a shower or applying a warm towel. This eases cutting and reduces irritation. Next, apply a quality shaving cream or soap by gently massaging it in to thoroughly penetrate the hair and skin.
2. Choosing and holding the razor
Take your straight razor and ensure it is well-sharpened. Hold it at about a 30-degree angle to the skin. A firm yet relaxed grip allows you to maintain control while letting the razor glide smoothly.
3. Start shaving
Shave first in the direction of hair growth, making slow and steady movements. Use short, precise strokes, being careful not to press too hard to avoid cuts. Follow the contours of your face and take your time to go over areas that need special attention.
4. Check and finish
After the first pass, you can check the quality of the shave and determine if a touch-up is necessary. If desired, you can lightly go against the grain for an even closer shave, being careful to remain attentive to prevent irritation.
5. Post-shave care
Once shaving is complete, rinse your face with cold water to close the pores. Gently dry with a clean towel and apply a balm or soothing lotion to hydrate and protect the skin. This final step also helps to prevent redness and irritation.
Each step should be performed with care and patience, transforming shaving into a true ritual of personal care. Mastering these techniques allows for not only a flawless shave but also a full appreciation of the benefits of a traditional and refined method.
Essential tools for successful open blade shaving
To ensure an optimal open blade shaving experience, it is essential to have the right tools. Here are the indispensable items that every enthusiast should possess:
The straight razor or open blade
The straight razor, also known as the open blade razor, is the central element of this type of shaving. It usually consists of a high-quality stainless steel blade mounted on a tangent blade, providing the necessary flexibility for a precise and comfortable shave. Investing in a good quality razor ensures durability and performance.
The razor holder (tangent blade)
The razor holder, or tangent blade, is a crucial piece that holds the blade in place while allowing for flexibility. A well-maintained tangent blade is vital for the safety and effectiveness of the razor. It should be regularly adjusted and replaced as needed to ensure optimal functioning.
The shaving cream or soap
The shaving cream or shaving soap plays a key role in the shaving process. These products aid in the smooth glide of the razor over the skin, hydrate the hair, and provide protection against irritation. Choose rich and natural formulations to maximize the benefits of your shaving ritual.
The shaving brush
A quality shaving brush allows for the even application of shaving cream or soap, creating abundant and silky lather. Brushes made from badger hair or synthetic materials provide a pleasant feel and increased efficiency, enhancing the skin’s preparation before shaving.
Aftershave lotion
After shaving, an aftershave lotion helps soothe and moisturize the skin. Products containing calming ingredients like aloe vera or chamomile are particularly beneficial for reducing redness and preventing irritation, leaving the skin soft and refreshed.
In addition to these main tools, it is recommended to have a good, well-lit and organized shaving space, as well as a quality mirror to observe the details of shaving. Taking care of this equipment and maintaining it regularly ensures a smooth and pleasant shaving experience while extending the longevity of your tools.
Tips for maintaining your shaving equipment
Maintaining your open blade shaving equipment is crucial to ensure its longevity and maintain optimal performance. Here are some essential tips for caring for your razor and accessories:
Regular cleaning of the razor
After each use, thoroughly rinse your straight razor under hot water to remove residue from shaving cream and hair. Gently shake off any remaining water and wipe the blade with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid leaving the razor wet, as this can promote rust and oxidation of the blade.
Sharpening the blade
The straight razor requires regular sharpening to maintain its edge. Use a sharpening stone or specific sharpener for straight razors, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Proper sharpening ensures a clean cut and reduces the risk of irritation and cuts.
Maintaining the tangent blade
The tangent blade should be frequently inspected for signs of wear or damage. If the blade is worn, warped, or damaged, it should be replaced immediately to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the razor. Regular maintenance of the tangent blade prolongs the life of the razor and maintains adequate flexibility.
Proper storage
Always store your shaving equipment in a dry and well-ventilated place. Use a razor stand or protective case to avoid physical damage and prolong the life of the blade. Avoid storing the razor in humid environments, like the bathroom, without adequate protection to prevent rust and oxidation.
Replacing accessories
Regularly replace the consumable parts of your equipment, such as the shaving cream or soap, to ensure optimal shaving quality. Also check the condition of your brush and aftershave lotion, and replace them as needed to maintain maximum hygiene and efficacy.
By following these maintenance tips, you not only ensure the longevity of your open blade shaving tools, but also optimize the quality of each shaving experience. Thoughtful maintenance reflects the care and craftsmanship inherent in this traditional method, allowing you to fully enjoy its numerous benefits.
Common mistakes to avoid during open blade shaving
Even with the best tools and careful preparation, some mistakes can compromise the open blade shaving experience. Here are the main errors to avoid to ensure a smooth, comfortable, and incident-free shave:
Not properly preparing the skin
Insufficient preparation is one of the most common mistakes. Shaving unsoftened skin can lead to irritation and cuts. Always start by cleaning with hot water to soften the hair and open the pores, making the blade smooth and effective.
Using a dull blade
A dull or improperly sharpened razor can cause tugging and irritation. Ensure that your blade is well-sharpened before each shave. A sharp razor glides more easily over the skin, reducing the need to go over the same area multiple times.
Holding the razor at the wrong angle
An incorrect angle can lead to cuts and uneven shaving. The straight razor should be held at about a 30-degree angle to the skin. If it is too tilted or too vertical, it risks not cutting the hair effectively or damaging the skin.
Applying excessive pressure
Forcing the razor onto the skin is a frequent mistake that can cause cuts and irritation. Let the weight of the razor do the work. Light and controlled movements allow for a clean and gentle cut, respecting both skin and hair.
Repeating strokes multiple times
Going over the same area multiple times can irritate and dry the skin. Try to limit each stroke to a single direction, following the hair growth. If necessary, adjust your technique or angle rather than forcing the razor to avoid damaging the skin.
Neglecting post-shave care
Ignoring the aftershave step can leave the skin dry and sensitive. Always rinse with cold water to close the pores, then apply a balm or soothing lotion to hydrate and protect the skin. These care steps help prevent irritation and maintain healthy skin.
By avoiding these common mistakes, you significantly improve the quality and safety of your open blade shaving. Mastering these technical aspects allows you to fully enjoy the benefits of this traditional method while minimizing the risks of discomfort or skin damage.
The importance of choosing shaving products
The choice of shaving products plays a crucial role in the success of an open blade shaving experience. Using high-quality products can enhance not only the performance of the razor but also the comfort and health of the skin.
First, the shaving cream or soap is essential to create a protective barrier between the razor and the skin. A good shaving cream should provide adequate hydration, reduce friction, and minimize the risks of irritation. Products rich in natural oils and soothing agents, such as aloe vera or shea butter, are particularly beneficial for nourishing the skin and preventing redness.
Next, the choice of aftershave balm or lotion is equally important. These products help to soothe the skin, reduce inflammation, and maintain long-lasting hydration. Prefer alcohol-free formulas to avoid drying and choose natural ingredients that promote skin regeneration.
The shaving brush used to apply the cream or soap also influences the effectiveness of the shave. A quality brush, made from badger hair or high-end synthetic materials, allows for a rich and homogeneous lather, which is essential for a smooth glide of the razor and maximum skin protection.
Finally, consider using complementary accessories such as a well-maintained straight razor and a suitable razor holder. These tools should be carefully selected according to your preferences and personal needs to ensure comfortable and secure use.
In summary, investing in high-quality shaving products that are suited to your skin type and preferences greatly contributes to the effectiveness and pleasure of your open blade shaving. A thoughtful selection of products maximizes the benefits of this traditional method while providing optimal care for your skin.
Experiences and testimonials
Many enthusiasts of open blade shaving testify to the benefits and satisfaction they derive from this traditional method. Here are some inspiring stories that illustrate the positive impact of this ancient art on their daily routine:
“I started open blade shaving out of curiosity, but it has become so much more than just a shaving method. Every morning, this ritual allows me to start the day mindfully, taking the time to care for myself. The precision and smoothness of the straight razor have transformed my skin, leaving it clear and irritation-free. It’s an unforgettable experience that I recommend to anyone looking to improve their shaving routine.” – Jean-Pierre, 45 years old
“Using a straight razor has been a revelation for me. Not only have I noticed a significant improvement in the quality of my shave, but it has also allowed me to reconnect with a family tradition. My grandfather used to shave this way, and now I carry on this habit with pride. It’s a moment of sharing and respect for an ancestral skill.” – Marc, 38 years old
These testimonials reflect the commitment and satisfaction of users who have embraced open blade shaving. They highlight not only the practical advantages, such as shaving quality and comfort, but also the emotional and cultural aspects that make this method unique and valuable.
Why choose open blade shaving over modern methods?
While modern shaving methods are gaining popularity due to their speed and convenience, open blade shaving offers distinct advantages that make it a wise choice for those seeking a superior and enriching shaving experience.
First, open blade shaving provides a closer result. The single, sharp blade of the straight razor cuts hair at the root with unparalleled precision, delivering smooth, irritation-free skin. Modern multi-blade razors, while effective, often cannot match this level of shaving finesse and may require multiple passes that can irritate the skin.
Next, the ritual of shaving with an open blade is a self-care experience. Unlike quick methods, this type of shaving encourages patience and focus, transforming a daily gesture into a moment of relaxation and well-being. This thoughtful approach promotes better skin hygiene and reduces the risks of cuts and irritation.
Moreover, open blade shaving is economical and environmentally friendly in the long run. Although the initial investment in a good straight razor may be higher, the costs are offset by the durability of the razor and the lack of need for frequent cartridge or disposable blade replacements. This method also reduces environmental impact by generating less waste.
Finally, choosing open blade shaving means embracing a tradition and culture that values craftsmanship and artistry. This method allows for a connection with ancestral practices and perpetuates a heritage of quality and precision. It is a choice that combines efficiency, sustainability, and respect for traditions, offering an enriching shaving experience in many respects.
In summary, open blade shaving stands out from modern methods due to its quality, ritual, and lasting benefits, making it a preferred option for those who seek to elevate their shaving routine beyond the ordinary.
